in Venice, Italy In 1970, a few years after they were married, my parents took a trip through Europe. This was taken in Venice. The original photo is almost completely faded.

Judging by the photo, my dad took this while standing in the boat with the small box camera we used to have. It was one of the first instant cameras, and was quite easy to use although it became more and more difficult to find film for it when Polaroids became popular.

Although she's pretty dressed up here, this is one of the most relaxed photos I think I've seen of my mother. There's another one I have, which I think is roughly from the same period, in which she's sitting on the lap of a male friend and they're laughing. She's dressed in a formal off-the-shoulder gown she made herself and high heeled shoes. There are two cans of Coors on the table next to their chair. It is perhaps one of the most candid photos of her.

I don't know if this is relevant, but sometimes I dream about Venice, and all the buildings are sinking into the polluted water of the canals.
