JONATHA BROOKE 10 Cent Wings
Refuge/MCA $16.98
rating: ****

Fans fed up with Sarah McLachlan's turn toward commercialism may find solace in Jonatha Brooke's latest. Her fourth album, "10(cent mark) Wings" boasts a maturity of craft only glimpsed in her work with The Story. There's a folky melancholy in "Because I Told You So" and "Annie," but "Crumbs" and "Landmine" have a rock feel that's almost anthemic. Other quirks -- like the sultry latin flavor of "Last Innocent Year" or the hip-hip nuances of "Blood From A Stone" -- broaden the record. But it's Brooke's unfettered, expressive voice and intelligent lyrics which gives these songs their wings.
